Alnwick Castle doesn’t mess about - it’s pure Northumberland confidence, all towers and walls, sitting like it still expects trouble from the next valley over.

It’s been home to the House of Percy for centuries, which feels about right when you see the scale of the place. From above, you really get the full footprint - layers of defences, big courtyards, and that sense it was built to make a point as much as to keep people out.

It’s also one of those landmarks that’s quietly made itself a second career on screen - if it looks familiar, there’s a good chance you’ve seen it pretending to be somewhere else.

Proper castle, proper setting, and absolutely no need for a moat to look intimidating.

Late afternoon winter sunshine really suits The Bowes Museum - it warms the stone up, pulls the detail out, and makes the whole place look crisp against the darker fields around Barnard Castle.

The museum exists because John and Joséphine Bowes wanted a public place to share the art and objects they’d collected. It opened in 1892, and neither of them lived to see it - which adds a quiet poignancy to something that was always meant to be enjoyed, not kept private.

Marrick Smelt Mill is a brilliant example of Swaledale’s lead-mining backbone - and from the air you can see both the upper and lower mill sites laid out in the hillside like a working diagram.

This isn’t just one ruin either. The scheduled remains here include two ore-hearth smeltmills, peat stores (fuel mattered up on these moors), and the earthworks and dams that helped manage water for the site.

There’s proper age to it as well - the first smeltmill on this spot is recorded in the 1570s, then later phases expanded and adapted what was here, including changes to flues and how the fumes were handled.

It’s quiet ground now, but the footprint is still clear - a reminder that the dale’s peaceful look has always had industry under the surface.

If you’ve ever been to Whitby, you’ll know this bridge has a special talent for testing the patience of most. On foot, you’re watching your fish and chips go cold while you wait for it to swing. In the car, you’re watching pedestrians saunter across without even pretending to care where the pavement ends and the road begins - at a pace most sloths would be envious of.

But that’s the charm of it, because this little pinch-point is also a working bit of harbour engineering. The current Whitby Swing Bridge opened in July 1909, replacing an older bridge so vessels could still get through to the upper harbour.

It’s a two-leaf, electrically powered swing bridge, brought in because the older one restricted the size of ships that could be built and moved upstream. Whitby wasn’t just postcards and ice creams - it was shipbuilding and harbour trade, and you couldn’t have a fixed bridge blocking the route. So yes, it can make you late and grumbly… but it’s been keeping the town moving for well over a century, and in Whitby a short delay just gives you longer to stare at how good the place looks.

Surrender Smelt Mill looks like it’s been dropped into the landscape and forgotten about - stone walls, open windows, and not a hint of comfort for miles around.

This was built for work, not for looks - tied to the lead-mining story of the dale, with the beck beside it and the moorland rolling away in every direction. It’s hard to stand here and not think about how remote this must have felt when it was busy.

From the air it really shows its hand - the mill ruins sitting like a map reference, surrounded by spoil heaps and old tracks that still scar the hillsides. The place is quiet now, but it doesn’t feel empty.

Also, if you ever fancied a holiday cottage with “character”, this is taking it a bit too far.

Ashgill Force in full flow is basically nature showing off - a proper wall of water thundering through the gorge, no messing about.

That old stone bridge over the top makes the scene even better. It’s got that “built to last” feel, while the waterfall underneath is doing its best to prove that nothing really lasts if it rains hard enough.

The colour of the water tells its own story too - all that peat and upland grit whipped into a frenzy, then smashed into foam at the bottom like it’s late for an appointment.

If you want a quiet, delicate trickle, this isn’t the one. This is Ashgill Force on full volume.

A proper Darlington railway moment this - the InterCity 125 HST rolling over Skerne Bridge, past Hopetown, and then onto the newly-laid track into the Darlington Locomotive Works.

Skerne Bridge opened in 1825 for the Stockton and Darlington Railway, and it’s still doing its job two centuries on. Seeing an HST glide across it is a brilliant clash of eras in one shot.

But the best bit is what happens next. This run became the first public passenger service to use the new connection into the works, turning a familiar stretch of line into a small piece of “first time” history again.

Old bridge, new rails, iconic train - and Darlington still quietly proving why it matters.

A winter evening at Whitby Abbey has a habit of turning the volume right up - all that dark stone, a cold sky, and just enough colour on the horizon to make it feel like the place is holding its breath.

From this angle the ruins look almost theatrical, with the arches standing like a stage set while Whitby glows away in the distance. It’s a reminder that the abbey isn’t tucked away in the countryside - it’s right there, watching the town go about its business.

Even when it’s stripped back to bare walls, it still has presence. The kind of landmark that doesn’t need to shout because everyone’s already looking.

And yes, it’s impossible not to think of ghost stories up here - the atmosphere does most of the work for you.

Larpool Viaduct is one of those bits of engineering that quietly steals the show - a long run of brick arches striding across the valley like it’s got somewhere important to be.

From this angle you get the whole story in one frame: the curve of River Esk below, woodland wrapped around the banks, and that rail line cutting a clean route towards the coast.

Then beyond it all, Whitby spreads out towards the harbour, with the town climbing the hillsides in that slightly chaotic, “we’ll fit another street in here somehow” way.

It’s the kind of view that makes you appreciate how much effort went into simply getting from A to B - and how good it looks when it’s done properly.

One of those views that never gets old - Easby Abbey laid out like a stone floorplan in the grass, with St Agatha's Church, Easby keeping watch in the foreground.

From above, you can really see the contrast - the quiet order of the churchyard, the broken edges of the abbey ruins, and the way the valley opens out behind them. It’s history you can read without needing a plaque.

Then in the distance you’ve got Richmond Castle and the rooftops of Richmond catching that sunset glow - like the whole scene’s been gently turned up a notch.

It’s the sort of place that makes you slow down, even if you’re only here for a photo. Not bad for a few old stones with a cracking view.
