Twelve magnificent stone arches stretching across the beautiful Smardale Valley, surrounded by lush woodland, rolling green hills and the wild countryside of the Westmorland Dales.

This stunning aerial photograph captures Smardale Viaduct, the tallest viaduct on the famous Settle-Carlisle Railway. Completed in 1875 for the Midland Railway, this extraordinary feat of Victorian engineering stands 40 metres high and stretches almost 220 metres across the valley of Scandal Beck. Designed by John Sydney Crossley, it remains an important part of one of Britain's most celebrated railway routes, still carrying trains through the Cumbrian countryside more than 150 years later.

Captured beneath an enormous blue sky filled with dramatic summer clouds, the photograph reveals the viaduct's graceful stone arches emerging from the woodland, with the sweeping green hills of the Yorkshire Dales National Park providing a spectacular backdrop.
