The rugged coastline around The Leas has been shaped by the North Sea over thousands of years, creating dramatic rock formations, secluded coves and some of the North East's most distinctive coastal scenery. In the distance stands Souter Lighthouse, built in 1871 as the first lighthouse in the UK purpose-built to use electricity, protecting ships from the treacherous reefs of Whitburn Steel.
