Trow Rock Disappearing Gun & South Shields Coast | Digital Download
A spectacular aerial view of Trow Rock and the sweeping South Shields coastline, bringing together Victorian military history, golden sandy beaches and the magnificent mouth of the River Tyne.
Dominating the foreground is the unusual Trow Rock Disappearing Gun, originally installed in 1887 as an experimental coastal defence weapon. Its ingenious mechanism was designed to lower the gun into a concrete emplacement for reloading, protecting its crew from enemy fire. Unfortunately, the mechanism proved far too slow for practical use, and the experiment was abandoned. The gun seen today is a replacement installed in 1987 to commemorate the original trials.
Beyond the historic gun, the photograph opens into a wonderful panorama of South Shields' golden sands, with the coastline sweeping towards the River Tyne. Across the water, Tynemouth Castle and Priory stand on the distant headland. The rich blue sea, dramatic summer sky and sunlit coastline make this a particularly striking celebration of South Tyneside's coastal scenery and military heritage.
A fantastic addition to any home or office, and an ideal gift for anyone who loves South Shields, the North East coastline or Britain's military history. Particularly special for those with treasured memories of South Shields' beaches or a personal connection to Tyneside.
